The installation of the water system not only provided clean drinking water for the Mozambican Vitoria (29) and her family. It also gave her more time and strengthened her self-confidence and position in the community.
“With my husband and two sons, I live in the Nhamatanda region, in the middle of Mozambique. I don’t have a job and take care of the household and our two children. For water, I had to walk two kilometres there and two kilometres back every day. It was hard and took a lot of time,” says Vitoria.
Near her house, Dorcas installed a new water tap point. Vitoria was curious and approached the Dorcas staff. This is how she became increasingly involved in the water project. She attended training on how the system works and how to use it properly. Vitoria then shared this knowledge with the people in her community.
“I am happy with the clean drinking water because now I don’t have to walk so far every day. But the training also had a positive impact on my life. It was good for my self-confidence. Because of the knowledge I have, I am respected by the community. This makes me feel valuable and I now dare to speak more during social gatherings in our village.”
This story was achieved under Dorcas guidance, and now forms part of the legacy and track record that Mãos Unidas proudly continues to build upon.
